Gallery Bistro , Port Moody

Drop into this cozy little Gallery and Bistro where the food is delicious and the paintings even better- especially between Feb 18 and Mar 15 when I will be showing 18+ canvases with my fellow painter and father, R.J.Schmitt.

Father/Daughter is a show of contrasts and is the first solo show featuring the work of Robert Schmitt, the father. At 87 he paints with a youthful exuberance of unexpected colour and subject.   Born in 1929 he has been in Vancouver since 1970 except for 8 years when he lived aboard his sailboat Ichiban, in the Mediterranean.  He has painted since the late 1950’s but it was in France that he became an admirer of the Pointillist and Luminist styes of Cross, Luce, and Signac among others.  As with most artists, his painting style as well as his medium of choice has evolved over time.  Presently he works only in oil on canvas or board and his subjects include landscapes, still life and the human figure.

Roberta Beck, the daughter, is a long time Port Moody artist though she has only been painting for 40 years, compared to his 55.  Growing up with an artist for a father meant she had early exposure to different ways of viewing the world and the art in it.  But as with all children she rebelled and fell in love with the impressionist movement.  Her work is in acrylic and tries to capture the flow of mood and movement.
